The Wallowa River is fishing great this spring. CFS flows of around 600 allow both floating and good bank fishing. Guides floating the river this past week reported lots of "fat/feisty" trout in the 11" to 14" range. Right now, it is pretty much a stonefly/dropper nymphing scene, but salmon flies are just starting to show up - so consider using a big orange chubby as your strike indicator. Euro nymphers fishing just off the bottom (which is what they do for a living) catch some of the biggest rainbows - to three lbs.

Wallowa Lake Outlet

The outlet area has steady flows and abundant insect hatches. It’s a great place for dry fly fishing and spotting rising trout.

Lostine River Junction

This area offers a mix of riffles and pools with good access for wading. Cutthroat trout are common here, especially near undercut banks.

Eagle Cap Wilderness Tributaries

Smaller streams feeding into the Wallowa provide excellent opportunities for adventurous anglers seeking less pressured fish. Use light gear and stealthy approaches.

Conservation and Fishing Regulations

Respecting local regulations ensures the Wallowa River remains a healthy habitat for fish and future anglers. Early June fishing is subject to specific rules:

  • Catch and release is encouraged for bull trout due to their sensitive status.

  • Check current Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife regulations for seasonal restrictions.

  • Use barbless hooks to minimize injury.

  • Avoid fishing during high water or spawning closures.

  • Pack out all trash and minimize disturbance to riverbanks.

Preparing for Your Early June Trip

Preparation is key to a rewarding fishing experience on the Wallowa River. Here are some practical tips:

  • Dress in layers to adapt to changing temperatures.

  • Bring polarized sunglasses to reduce glare and improve fish visibility.

  • Carry insect repellent to protect against mosquitoes and biting flies.

  • Pack a fishing license and familiarize yourself with local rules.

  • Consider hiring a local guide for insider knowledge and access to prime spots.

Summary of Early June Wallowa River Fishing

Early June offers a balanced mix of water conditions, active fish, and manageable weather that makes the Wallowa River a prime destination for anglers. Targeting rainbow, cutthroat, and bull trout with appropriate gear and techniques increases your chances of success. Exploring key locations like the Minam River confluence and Wallowa Lake outlet provides diverse fishing experiences. Following conservation practices and regulations helps protect this treasured river for years to come.
